First Floor Theater presents the Chicago premiere of Donja R. Love's play (part of a trilogy about Black love at pivotal moments in history), directed by Mikael Burke. A mystical tree on a Civil War-era plantation protects a young enslaved man, James, as he reads about the possibility of freedom. The arrival of a stranger sets off romantic sparks and leads James and his "makeshift family" into uncharted territory.
