Summer and Smoke Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 29 2011

Even by Tennessee Williams's standards, Alma Winemiller is one pitiful spinster. Her father is an overbearing minister, her mother, a loon. She's got a dweeb for a suitor, and the man she hankers after is a manipulative drunkard (sexy, sympathetic Josh Odor). Eve Rydberg has all the right instincts as the high-strung, heartsick southern belle--now if only she weren't too young for the role. The same could be said of this ambitious production from the Den Theatre: it's promising but premature. The creative team demonstrates a worthy vision and an understanding of the text even when the execution stalls. With time and attention to elements such as casting, dialects, and pacing, the Den could be a company to watch. --Dan Jakes
