Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams

An acutely rhetorical treatment of the crisis of middle-age in the lives of an ophthalmologist (Martin Balsam) and his shrewd, shrewish wife (Joanne Woodward), Gilbert Cates's film is heavy on the probing close-ups and expository dialogue and light on dramatic involvement and subtlety. The overall effect is one of having seen it all done before and better (by Bergman, whose Magician both inspires this film and is, aptly, quoted from, and Stanley Donen, whose Two for the Road covered the same ground with vastly more style and intelligence).
