Summercamp! | Chicago Reader

Summercamp!

Pleasantly quotidian and occasionally insightful, this documentary by Bradley Beesley and Sarah Price follows a handful of kids, most from Chicago and its suburbs, during a three-week stay at Swift Nature Camp in Minong, Wisconsin. Relieved of their cell phones, laptops, and Game Boys, they begin to seem like children again, though they still compare notes on their ADHD meds. Beesley, a longtime collaborator of the Flaming Lips, appropriates some of their weirdly innocent summer-themed tunes for the soundtrack, but the documentary's real interest lies in its quiet attentiveness to that transitional phase between childhood and adolescence, when kids are sharpening their sense of themselves. 84 min.
