Sunday Too Far Away

Next to the work of Fred Schepisi, this, for my money, is the best film to come out of Australia's movie renaissance; it's a modest, Hawksian study of sheep-shearers in the empty Outback, directed with wit and wonderful naturalness by Ken Hannam (1975). The Australian cinema isn't all social themes, period decor, and landscape photography; this is the film that proves it has people too. Jack Thompson stars, miles away from his studied staginess in Breaker Morant.
