Suns, Sequoia, Snow Ghost, Court of Owls 17+ Recommended Soundboard

When: Fri., Dec. 28, 8:30 p.m. 2012

Local six-piece Suns make music that borrows from intricate postrock and sprawling, choral indie rock. On their new self-released debut, When We Were Us, they turn surging tremolo-treated guitar, nimble bass lines, focused yet explosive drumming, and sweet vocal harmonies into sometimes dreamy, sometimes soaring songs. The album is lush and beautiful but a little samey, so that the few tracks that stand out feel especially worthy of attention: a steadily galloping beat helps the sprightly, buoyant “Strangeland” coast along, and melancholy slide guitar brings twinges of wistfulness to the sometimes stark “Field Poison.” —Leor Galil Sequoia, Snow Ghost, and Court of Owls open.
