Supreme Love Recommended Member Picks New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 20 2015

This year marks the 50th anniversary of John Coltrane's classic album A Love Supreme, and in its honor local tap group MADD Rhythms has joined with the Rajiv Halim Quartet for this collaborative performance. Given the frenetic potential of both jazz and tap, the combination could easily get out of hand. But choreographer Jumaane Taylor skillfully integrates modern dance with tap to produce a work reminiscent of Bill T. Jones, with the addition of exciting percussive rhythms. Saxophonist Halim and his group show masterful command of the music, especially in the quietly meditative moments that come between dramatic outbursts of sound. Every step was in perfect time—at times the audience couldn't help but spontaneously holler and applaud. This innovative performance modernizes Coltrane and brilliantly introduces his music to a new generation. —Brianna Wellen
