Suspicion of Comedy

To the editors:

Although it is considered bad form for an artist to reply to his tormentors, I must object to Lawrence Bommer's contention that my show, Theater of Funny, is an "alleged comedy revue" [May 8].

I never alleged it to be a comedy revue; in fact, my publicity goes to some trouble to distinguish it from a comedy revue. If anything, Theater of Funny is a kind of reaction against the idea of a comedy revue.

I do not wish to berate Mr. Bommer for judging the show as something it is not. That is a critic's prerogative. Permit me to observe, however, that a person who thinks a fish is a horse is likely to be disappointed by its foot speed.
