The 70s cop show S.W.A.T. ran for less than two years, but it's held in tender regard by a sufficient number of closet fascists to have triggered this big-screen revival. As summer shoot-'em-ups go, this is pretty well executed, with plenty of macho posing and gunfire. (There's also a chase scene through the LA subway—a subtle stratagem on the criminals' part, since most Angelenos are unaware of its existence.) Samuel L. Jackson stars as the rascally captain of the SWAT team; among his charismatic storm troopers are Colin Farrell, LL Cool J, and Michelle Rodriguez (Girlfight). Clark Johnson, whose HBO movie about the Montgomery bus boycott nabbed a 2001 Peabody Award, directed. PG-13, 111 min.
