Earlier this month, San Diego-bred producer Rafa Alvarez (aka Different Sleep) put together a Soundcloud mix for music site Yours Truly, using tracks from his adopted hometown of Chicago; he blurs together the frenetic footwork of DJ Rashad’s “I Don’t Give a Fuck,” the sunny bop of DJ Nate’s “Gucci Gogglez,” and the sultry booty R&B of the GTW’s “Calling Cards” (to name just a few) into a breezy, glistening whole. Alvarez belongs to Svengali, a collective of young producers (including former local Mister Lies) who make fluid, dusky electronic music. On his brand-new EP, Conflict (Friends of Friends), he rolls out tranquil, starlit slow jams—“Cold,” which features vaguely tropical San Diego indie-pop act Dirty Gold, has a pleasantly lulling feel that reminds me of slowly falling asleep with my head on the window of an empty night bus. —Leor Galil
