Sweet Home East Village

Dear Ms. Putre,

I want to thank you for writing such an excellent article on East Village ["The Monsters of East Village," May 21].

I have lived here all my life (66 years), even when it was not so trendy and people would ask, why are you still there?

One of the things that kept me here was the lovely old architecture. It is those very streets you mention that had the loveliest architecture--redbrick cottages and pleasant frame homes with colorful little gardens.

As you wrote, some of these are now lost forever. I hope more can be saved.

Some of these greedy developers would tear down the Taj Mahal to make condos if they could make money off of it.

Thanks again for a most illuminating article.
