Sydney White

In this loose retelling of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Amanda Bynes stars as the title character, a spunky tomboy and college freshman who joins the same sorority as her late, revered mother, which is presided over by an icy blond beauty (Sara Paxton) who must have grown up worshipping Leona Helmsley. Inevitably the two lock horns, and when Bynes's character is banished from the sorority on trumped-up rules violations, she's taken in by seven, er, dorks—misfit male students—and plots her revenge. While the film's premise is shamelessly hokey and Joe Nussbaum's direction is at best pedestrian, props are due the young cast, especially Bynes, whose can-do optimism seems genuine if ultimately overdone. With Matt Long, Jack Carpenter, and John Schneider. PG-13, 90 min.
