Take Me to Town

81 minutes

Douglas Sirk, the cinema's master of understated irony, directed this 1953 musical film noir. An innocuous story about a minister (Sterling Hayden) adopting a dance-hall girl (Ann Sheridan) as a substitute mother for his three children becomes a nightmare vision of the birth of the middle class and its attendant spiritual horrors. Sirk's perversity demonstrates the depth of American movies at the time they were thought to be most shallow.
