Strong performances by Minnie Driver and Jeremy Renner anchor this high-minded but familiar message drama (2007) about capital punishment. The narrative bounces between two related story lines: in one a sad sack with a gambling habit (Renner) lurches toward a botched holdup that claims the life of a little boy; in the other, set a few years later, the child's mother (Driver) travels cross-country to witness the culprit's death by lethal injection. A fine supporting actor, Renner acquits himself admirably as the dazed, hangdog killer, though he's thwarted by some trite scenes in which the condemned man, preparing to walk the last mile, debates God's wisdom with his Christian confessor (Adam Rodriguez). Charles Oliver directed his own script. 99 min.
