Talk About God: Five Cents Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Mondays. Continues through Dec. 19 2011

Tom Noe's one-act is set inside a tent of the type used for old-time revival meetings—except that here the congregants don't get preached at. Instead, they file in one at a time, plunk down a nickel, and discuss their own experiences or opinions relating to the Almighty. In Danielle Stack's bare-bones staging for Gorilla Tango Theatre, a curtain represents the tent flap, and the doubtful and the devout address their monologues to an unseen, unheard auditor whose purposes remain unexplained. The characters' stories aren't out of the ordinary, but Noe movingly conveys how full of mystery the ordinary can be. Even the believers allow as how God is elusive and our longing for him can feel like a "little pit of pain" in the gut. —Zac Thompson
