Tallgrass Gothic Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: 2009

Melanie Marnich's script takes the bones of Thomas Middleton and William Rowley's Jacobean classic, The Changeling, and bleaches them out against a bleak, contemporary Great Plains setting. The pace of Jennifer Shook's spare staging feels frustratingly deliberate from time to time, but a growing aura of unease and inevitability helps overcome some of the clunkier elements in this tale of infidelity and murder. (Why Laura, the unhappy wife, can't hire a divorce attorney rather than a killer--this isn't medieval Spain, after all--is never explained.) As Mary, Laura's truth-telling alcoholic friend ("people like you make the locusts come"), Kaitlin Byrd leaves a powerful impression of anguish barely disguised by booze and bonhomie. Runs in repertory with The Changeling. See both plays for $5 extra. --Kerry Reid
