Tamer of Horses Recommended The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through May 4 2013

The first scene of William Mastrosimone's 1985 play indicates an after-school special of a drama: runaway reprobate Hector sits freestylin' in a barn until he's discovered and taken in by the farm's owners. But under Carl Lindberg's tight direction, the ace cast in this Stone Soup Theatre production make a predictable story gripping and resonant. As Ty, the former classics teacher who teaches Hector about the freestyle pentameter of Homer's Iliad, Steven Royce Stinson perfectly captures the quixotic passion of the born teacher. Lindberg's present-day staging is fresh and depressingly relevant. But then, Mastrosimone's point is that the best thing for a knucklehead is a good teacher, and that's been true for a while. —Keith Griffith
