Target Behavior Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through May 17 2015

Caity-Shea Violette's well-intentioned new play for 20% Theatre Company aspires to be part of the tradition of mental institution dramas that suggest insanity is the only sane response to an insane world. Bright and snarky 17-year-old Kendra has an irresponsible single mom and a habit of cutting herself, but what finally lands her in the hospital is the (unspecified) aftermath of a terrifying encounter with an older guy named Patrick. Violette's script feels like an after-school special: too often it resorts to quips instead of straight talk, ends arguments with dramatic exits, and, worst of all, betrays itself and its heroine with a cutesy final scene that does nothing at all to resolve Kendra's problems with living in the world outside the hospital. —Aimee Levitt
