Tartuffe The Short List (Theater) Recommended Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through June 28 2015

Rhymed verse is a high-stakes game, but the couplets in Ranjit Bolt’s irreverent 1991 translation of Molière’s farce are loaded enough to make Rhymin’ Simon jealous, and this Organic Theater production lets fly with them. Eschewing the usual period staging, director Alexander Gelman opts for a Kardashianesque shout-out—velour jumpsuits, eyeliner, Tartuffe's feet clad in an ostentatiously humble pair of gray Toms. Huffy entrances announce themselves with every clank of the metal curtains at the back of the stage, and a lot of action gets lost there. And while typically a table provides cover for the disbelieving Orgon as he watches Tartuffe blithely seduce his wife, here Orgon’s reactions take place offstage. Where’s the fun in that? —Chloe Riley
