Tattoo | Chicago Reader

By now knockoffs of David Fincher's Seven could probably sustain a weeklong series at the Film Center, so strong is the public's appetite for blue-lit depravity. German TV director Robert Schwentke's 2002 feature debut is a spooky thriller about a hard-bitten detective (Christian Redl) and a dispirited rookie (August Diehl) tracking a serial killer who stalks his victims for their body art. Along the way they discover a grim subculture of tattoo collectors who pay people for their skin, but the fetish is more exploited than explored, and Schwentke's script ultimately refers back to Fincher's movie for its conclusion. 108 min.
