Teacher's Pet

Gary Baseman's Emmy-winning cartoon series arrives on the big screen in a delightful blast of bold drawing, brainy humor, and hard-charging songs. The title character, a talking dog voiced by Nathan Lane, disguises himself as a boy in order to attend school with his master; eager to become the real thing, he sets off for the Everglades in search of a mad doctor (Kelsey Grammer) who claims to turn animals into humans. Like The Ren & Stimpy Show, this derives its visual edge from a warped, slightly grotesque drawing style, and like South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, it's jammed with funny production numbers. Amid this minefield of satire, the boy-and-his-dog love story remains improbably affecting, which makes the movie a fine antidote to the overbearing Cat in the Hat. Timothy Bjorklund directed. PG, 68 min.
