Tell Me What You Remember The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Mondays, Tuesdays. Continues through Dec. 16 2014

Erasing the Distance, the monologue-based troupe that uses performance to combat the stigma of mental illness, understands the power of simplicity. In its past shows, actors stood alone on bare stages, reciting verbatim transcripts of interviews with people suffering through all manner of trauma. With no theatrical gimmicks to hide behind, the performers could only give voice to discomfiting truths—and the results were riveting. In ETD's new hour-long piece, which chronicles depression's devastating multigenerational effects on one Chicago family, five actors occupy the poetic semblance of a family home, delivering interwoven monologues, dialogues, and reenactments. While the performances are mostly astute and affecting, the production's layers of artifice sap the material of immediacy, giving this family's disquieting truth the feel of comfortable fiction. —Justin Hayford
