Tempting Fate

A program of very short plays can be forgiving: if you don't like one piece, it's over quickly and there's another. But nine of the ten ten-minute plays in Brown Couch Theatre Company's show, all loosely exploring the theme of superstition, have little impact. It's not so much that the work is offensively bad as that it's boring, amateurish, and ultimately tiresome. Only Joe Tracz's Apple the Color of Your Neck has resonance. Though the piece isn't expertly executed, there's something hopeful about the script, in which a burgeoning relationship gives a woman the courage she needs to change. Through 8/13: Thu-Sat 7:30 PM, Sun 3 PM. Chicago Actors Studio, 1567 N. Milwaukee, 312-409-2010. $12-$15.
