Fiber artist Kathy Weaver’s exhibit, terra nano, opens at the Gordon Center for Integrative Science at the University of Chicago on April 9, 2010. Weaver’s large airbrushed satin paintings are on a macro scale. Their interiors detail the environs of a nano robot bent on exploring an alternate world, which, in works such as Mimetic Concerns, depict organic forms in strange and lushly colored landscapes. Weaver’s works remind us of the primordial soup, but are rooted in the field of artificial intelligence and robotics. The stitched paintings contrast the nurturing softness of satins with the complex forms of organic chemistry, cellular biology, and engineered robots. Terra nano is sponsored by Science in Art, an organization originating at UC that uses art as a vehicle for creating connections between scientists and non-scientists. The opening reception will be April 9th 6:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and features experimental percussive music by Owleater.
