Mainstream comedy directors have come to value one-liners as ends in themselves, which is why their movies have cobbled-together quips instead of dialogue. The refreshing thing about this otherwise formulaic romantic comedy is that writer-director Tom Gormican gives the verbal humor some rhythm, shooting many of the dialogue-driven scenes in long takes so they develop a pleasing ebb and flow. Two single, upwardly mobile New Yorkers (Zac Efron, Miles Teller) promise to help their recently divorced best friend (Michael B. Jordan) navigate the dating scene but renege on their offer when each meets the girl of his dreams. With Imogen Poots.
