That's Weird, Abuelita Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays, Saturdays. Continues through Aug. 18 2012

The Sachs Building didn't become a social services complex, as some neighborhood activists hoped it would. That iconic wedge at the acute angle of Milwaukee and Diversey got turned into swanky artists' lofts instead. But at least the masses can access the nifty second-floor art center that opened there in late July. That's where Barrel of Monkeys is staging this bilingual variation on the raucous children's show, That's Weird, Grandma. Like its sister production, Spanish-heavy Abuelita takes stories by public-school students and transforms them into zany short sketches, somehow avoiding the curse of preciousness every time. This is a good work in every sense of the phrase. —Keith Griffith
