The 13 Clocks Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Dec. 4 2011

The Duke of Coffin Castle is as mean as they come. Prone to tearing the wings off of nightingales, he keeps his warmhearted charge, Saralinda, captive by thinking up impossible tasks for her suitors to fail to perform. Naturally, he doesn't reckon on the cunning--and amazingly good luck--of a certain prince disguised as a wandering minstrel. Robert Kauzlaric has adapted James Thurber's eccentric 1950 fairy tale with an eye to preserving that wry, literate Thurberian voice--which is admirable but also wrongheaded, since all that literacy starts weighing on this kids' show after a while. Similarly, Amanda Delheimer's staging is cluttered with nice ideas that don't quite work. Puppet versions of the main characters, for instance, just get in the way of a competent human cast. --Tony Adler
