When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 14 2014

The 48-Hour Musicals, the Music Theatre Company's annual workshop of 15-minute musicals created in 48 hours or less, is a look behind the curtain at the creative process. This year it reprises four crowd favorites from past years, then departs from the format entirely with the world premiere of Smashing Pumpkins front man Billy Corgan's Pretty Persephone, a 20-minute musical that admittedly took more than 48 hours to construct. Inspired by the Eleusinian mysteries, it's just the dark, twisted atmospheric fantasy you'd hope for, with stunning choreography by Jessica Beth Redish. Some of the other four pieces, while still just seeds, have moments that show real promise: in Diana Lawrence's hopeful Postcards From Paris, it's the harmonies of Victoria Blade, Patrick Martin, and Emily Berman while singing about the "edge of tomorrow"; in Scotty Arnold's Tereshkova, it's the melancholic interplay between Andrew Mueller and Matthew Keffer, playing secret lovers. —Marissa Oberlander
