The 4th Graders Present an Unnamed Love-Suicide Agenda New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 8 2015

The conceit of Sean Graney’s adorably morbid 2003 play is that it was written by a nine-year-old just before shooting himself and now it’s being performed by his classmates at a school assembly. Based on The Love Suicides at Amijima by 18th-century Japanese playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon, the story involves star-crossed love and revenge gone wrong. The juxtaposition of kabuki and juice boxes is amusing, but Graney’s handling of serious issues like bullying and gun violence ultimately feels glib. Joel Ewing and Mechelle Moe’s stylized revival, coproduced by the Hypocrites and the Yard, gains considerable poignancy from being performed by a talented cast of Senn High School students only a few years older than the characters they play. —Zac Thompson
