The Addams Family New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries) Brief Run (Theater)

When: Dec. 28-Jan. 1 2012

Having inspired a sitcom in the 1960s and two movies in the '90s, Charles Addams's delightfully macabre New Yorker cartoons eventually begat this much reviled, much revamped stage musical by Andrew Lippa, Marshall Brickman, and Rick Elice. Since its 2009 Chicago debut, the show has acquired new songs by Lippa and new plot points from Brickman and Elice. No matter. The score remains unhummable pastiche, the story (daughter Wednesday brings a normal home to meet the folks) feels contrived, and the script seesaws between bland quips and cloying sentiment. Douglas Sills's hammy Gomez and Sara Gettelfinger's above-it-all Morticia almost split up this time—but inasmuch as their dispute is so obviously engineered to inject drama, it's hard to care. My faith in the superiority of The Munsters remains secure. —Zac Thompson
