The Adventures of Pinocchio Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 28 2011

Neil Bartram and Brian Hill's new musical recaptures two facets of Carlo Collodi's classic that were lost in the well-known 1940 Disney cartoon—namely, the ever-present cruelty in Collodi's tale of a puppet who makes a series of very human mistakes on his way to becoming a real boy and the depth of Geppetto's loneliness. (Heidi Kettenring's Cat and Derek Hasenstab's Fox brilliantly embody the former, Don Forston the latter.) But on the other hand, this self-consciously artistic production—filled with gorgeous hand-carved puppets by Meredith Miller—lacks a playful spirit that engages children and keeps their attention. The middle drags, and almost all of the humor in Hill's book feels forced or falls flat. —Jack Helbig
