The All-American Genderfuck Cabaret The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Sept. 7 2012

If Mariah MacCarthy's LGBT montage play were anywhere near as bold, playful, and salacious as its title suggests, she might be onto something. Endearing gender-bender Taylor (Becky Blomgren) serves as the earnest emcee, leading us through a series of vignettes in which male and female archetypes navigate situations that challenge heteronormative expectations. Docu-lecture style, she pauses the action to provide commentary on the relationships and sexual proclivities of her eight characters, who range from ball-busting lesbians to straight squares and become more cartoonish the closer to vanilla they fall on that spectrum. Moments resonate here and there in this Pride Films and Plays production—but, lacking a focused plot, director Tara Branham can't make heads or tails of MacCarthy's long-winded piece, which is more of a thesis draft than a theatrical script. —Dan Jakes
