The American Drink Book The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Jan. 21 2012

Part booze bible and part time capsule, S.S Field's 1953 tome, The American Drink Book, provides not just the title but the inspiration for this evening of monologues from BoyGirlBoyGirl. Still, if liquor is the way in, America is at the heart of the show. Each beautifully wrought speech plays out like a Rockwellian comment on modern life. A suburban misfit relates her sense of kinship with housewife/literary badass Shirley Jackson. A man recounts the diminishing fortunes of his father's makeshift, in-home bar. And Edward Thomas-Herrera's bittersweet piece about a lost friend is so poignant, so personal, and so fluid that it may as well have been told first at 2 AM, over a table of empty tumblers. Part of Rhinofest. —Dan Jakes
