The Americanization of Emily

London war widow Julie Andrews falls for cowardly American naval officer James Garner on the eve of the Normandy invasion. Andrews's first attempt to live down her Mary Poppins image was this primly improper Arthur Hiller comedy, though she reverted to full-strength saccharinity the following year in Robert Wise's The Sound of Music. It's hard to stay on the wagon, I guess. With James Garner, Melvyn Douglas, James Coburn, Joyce Grenfell, William Windom, and Keenan Wynn; Paddy Chayevsky contributed the screenplay (1964).
