The Animation Show

American animators Mike Judge (Beavis and Butt-head, King of the Hill) and Don Hertzfeldt promise “a collection of the world's best animated short films” but indulge their own interests instead of delivering a representative sampler of the state of the art. Hertzfeldt has drawn some witty intermission and closing segments tweaking animators who fret over their status as artistes; his Rejected (2000), about an unstable animator whose increasingly perverse bits are turned down by corporate clients, earned a 2001 Academy Award nomination. A real find is Ward Kimball's Mars and Beyond, a series of extraterrestrial landscapes and animated space creatures commissioned by Disney in the 50s for a “science-factual” TV production. Another highlight is Tim Burton's Vincent (1982), the delightfully ghoulish tale of a boy who shares the first name and gothic sensibility of its rhyming narrator, Vincent Price. 95 min.
