The Antelope Party The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 24 2018

With a photoshopped image of a My Little Pony figurine decorating the promo materials, you'd think Eric John Meyer's play would be a goof on the kids' toy-turned-cult object. And you'd be right, for maybe 20 minutes. The show starts with a comically underattended gathering of the Rust Belt Ponies Meetup Group, complete with homemade costumes and wistful misfits. But from there Meyer takes an odd, fascinating turn: the neighborhood where the misfits meet has become an outpost for a watch group that evolves into a militant political organization with an arcane, quasi-Wagnerian mythology. Meyer is brilliant at showing how fantasy play may produce a brony or a neo-Nazi. If only other elements of his narrative were as strong: engaging as it is, Jeremy Wechsler's staging for Theater Wit can't hide the sketchiness of some of the characters. —Tony Adler
