The Archivist Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 20 2011

The future has been done to death, especially the dystopian kind—and Stephen Gawrit's play hasn't got anywhere near the wattage necessary to shock it back to life. There are some nice touches in this Right Brain Project premiere. I was particularly fascinated by the somehow melancholy wires that run through Scott Schoonover's costumes and into the hair of certain actors playing cyborgs. But Gawrit and director Emma Peterson oscillate between the inchoate and the cliched as they tell their tale of postapocalyptic nostalgists attempting to restore the all-but-extinct human race. The clipped, uninflected robo-talk of the cyborgs would've seemed tolerable to me if The Archivist had only offered a solid answer to one crucial question: Why bring people back? —Tony Adler
