The Atomic States of America

This informative documentary summarizes numerous crises related to nuclear energy, including the infamous 1979 meltdown at Three Mile Island and the ongoing issue of where to store our country's rapidly accumulating nuclear waste. The facts are upsetting, as are the inevitable portraits of terminal cancer patients who lived in close proximity to nuclear reactors. As filmmaking, however, this never rises above the level of a TV news exposé (indeed, there are plenty of TV news clips in the movie); the recent Danish documentary Into Eternity explored the subject matter more thoughtfully and poetically. Dan Argott and Sheena M. Joyce directed.
