The Bank Dick

74 minutes

Undiluted W.C. Fields. This 1940 film seems to spring straight from his cranky, beleaguered, convoluted personality, with no concessions made to film form, audience enjoyment, or common sense, and still it's very funny in a desultory, strangely private kind of way. Fields is Egbert Souse, a professional drinker who accidentally foils a bank robbery and is given a job as a guard as a reward; there is some business with a worthless gold mine and a visiting movie company, but mostly the picture just sputters along. With Franklin Pangborn, Shemp Howard, Jack Norton, and Grady Sutton as Og Oggilbie.
