The Beats The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through Oct. 15 2011

First produced at Writers' Theatre in 1997, Marilyn Campbell's script takes on a huge subject--the Beat Generation--and then stumbles because Campbell never finds a theme or figure to unify the disparate material. Instead, she follows the model of a jukebox musical, giving us one poem or prose selection after another in no apparent order. Still, the show is entertaining, thanks in part to Campbell's eye for great Beat material--but mostly because of Ann Filmer's young, energetic, earnest ensemble. John Taflan makes a great Allen Ginsberg and Carly Ciarrocchi is so winning as Diane di Prima that I kept wishing Campbell had built The Beats around this often-overlooked poet. --Jack Helbig
