When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 8 2013

Jacob attempted suicide at 14. It drove his mother, Nancy, to drink and to divorce her husband. Now Jacob's washed out of his first year at college and landed back on Nancy's doorstep, announcing he's stopped taking his psychotropics and hates everyone—except his adoring younger brother, Charlie. Playwright Erik Gernand's 85-minute world premiere at first appears a dutiful, derivative Shepard-esque family psychodrama, but Gernand quickly stakes out his own turf, plunging his characters into ethical turmoil: Nancy's long-standing efforts to support her troubled son's eccentricities may have allowed him to plan a horrific crime. Gernand ingeniously navigates a world of increasingly murky morality, and director Josh Altman's pitch-perfect cast hugs every hairpin turn to the harrowing, heartbreaking finale. —Justin Hayford
