The Beauty of the Father Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through Nov. 19 2011

How's this for a messy love triangle? While visiting her father in Spain, a young woman falls for a sexy Moroccan only to discover that dad is in love with him, too. Playwright Nilo Cruz resists the melodramatic potential in this premise, opting instead for lots of poetic atmosphere, with the ghost of Federico Garcia Lorca observing from the sidelines and stepping forward now and then to say something pretty about the moon. In Cecilie Keenan's Urban Theater Company staging, neither Madrid Saint Angelo as the father nor Jasmin Cardenas as the daughter conveys much inner torment, which only underscores the static nature of the script. Still, as the third point in the triangle, Nicolas Gamboa is sultry and magnetic enough to seem worth all the fuss. --Zac Thompson
