After a time as the awkwardly named 17 West at the Berghoff, this Loop institution has returned to its roots.

Restaurant Details

After a multiyear run as the awkwardly named 17 West at the Berghoff, the Berghoff Restaurant has returned to its roots, albeit with some lighter options, including some touted as gluten free. The charming atmosphere and historic interiors have been largely preserved, with a bit of remodeling that's made the bar (and its lunch-only buffet) more easily accessible from the dining room. Several signature dishes have been retained as well, notably the Wiener schnitzel, knockwurst, and the famous creamed spinach. Desserts, including holdovers like Black Forest cake and, in season, a Yule log, are still wonderful. And though the dining room's prices remain on the steep end of things, sitting at the bar makes you privy to some exceptionally good happy hour specials on nibbles and drinks.

Bar Details

Opened as a saloon (men only) in 1898, the Berghoff remains best experienced at the bar, where you can quaff the house beer by the stein while sitting at the handsome wooden counter. At happy hour there are some exceptionally good specials on nibbles and drinks. —Rob Christopher
