The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas Recommended The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through June 20 2010

This sweet, slightly sentimental 1978 musical tells its story--in which whores with hearts of gold run afoul of an opportunistic televangelist--with elegant simplicity. But what puts Kevin Bellie's Circle Theatre staging a cut above is his choreography: he seems to deliver another thrilling, high-energy dance number every five minutes. A large-cast Broadway show packed onto a tiny storefront stage, the production occasionally feels as confined as a couple of teens making out in a subcompact. But most of the time, thanks to Bellie's fine casting, the show soars. Noah Sullivan and Anita Hoffman are especially fine as the Sheriff and the madam at the heart of the story. --Jack Helbig
