The Beverly Hillbillies, the Musical Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater) Image

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 10 2014

I thought the book for this new musical was idiotic, but then I watched the first three episodes of the 1960s TV show on which it's based. (Thanks, YouTube.) Turns out that writers David and Amanda Rogers pulled situations, bits, even individual lines straight from the long-running sitcom about the Clampetts, a family of backwoods hicks who get rich and move to Beverly Hills. So the book isn't idiotic after all. It's nostalgic. And if you can stand about 140 minutes of this kind of nostalgia, well, knock yourself out. Just be warned that you'll also have to contend with Gregg Opelka's dull score and David Perkovich's ungainly, off-pace direction. The only fun I had was watching highly trained professionals—like Jim Harms as Jed—doing their playful best to make a silk purse out of a possum's innards. —Tony Adler
