The Big Bounce

Elmore Leonard's first crime novel (1969), a sweet little noir about a Detroit burglar hooked by a teenage femme fatale, becomes a Hawaiian caper comedy in the uncertain hands of George Armitage (Miami Blues). Owen Wilson plays the surfer hero, who's seduced by blandly provocative beach vixen Sara Foster into ripping off a safe belonging to her sugar daddy (Gary Sinise); Morgan Freeman, the sole bright spot in the film, plays Wilson's fatherly boss, who tries to steer him clear of trouble but has his own agenda. Armitage adds a slick veneer of slapstick and one-liners to Leonard's novel, but the story has been so spun around it barely knows how to end. PG-13, 89 min.
