The Big Picture

114 minutes 2012

This understated French suspense film (2010) starts out in familiar Claude Chabrol territory: a successful Paris businessman (Romain Duris) begins to suspect his wife of having an affair and slowly unravels. After a plot twist straight out of Chabrol's The Unfaithful Wife (1969), the movie switches gears, but the second half is just as derivative, plundering Michelangelo Antonioni's The Passenger for its existentialist vibe and drifting narrative structure (the protagonist even becomes a photographer, inviting comparison with Jack Nicholson's character in the Antonioni film). Director Eric Lartigau, adapting a novel by Douglas Kennedy, clearly has good taste in movies; he should try making one of his own. In English and subtitled French.
