The Binding | Saint Luke's Lutheran Church of Logan Square | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

The Binding Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 3 2013

Theatre Y's new home, the old Saint Luke's Lutheran Church of Logan Square, is a vaulted, sepulchral space, abandoned since 1926 and seemingly sealed off from the world—or maybe the universe. So it's perfect for Evan Hill's elliptical new play, based loosely on the Jewish legend of the archangel Michael's appearance to Abraham just before his death. Director Melissa Lorraine concocts a few stunning, wordless images over the course of the show's 90 minutes: a red wooden chair hoisted into the air on a thick rope, then left to swing lazily, is inexplicably heartbreaking. But Hill's script is frustratingly inexpressive, packed with opaque symbology, florid language, and indistinct characters. Despite earnest acting, the show feels as insular as the room itself. —Justin Hayford
