Hell in a Handbag Productions' 2013 revival of its Hitchcock homage earned a thumbs-up from star Tippi Hedren herself. David Cerda and Pauline Pang's clever parody gives audiences a behind-the-scenes soundstage tour and analyzes Hitchcock's manipulative and torturous treatment of his leading lady, played straight by Catherine McCafferty. This year's reimagined production feels like a victory lap, and it's a pricey one to boot: on opening night, in drag as schoolteacher Annie Hayworth, Cerda made a deadpan aside about the show's budget ("You spend $30 K on a show . . . "). At least the money's put to fabulous use. Every production element, from the period costumes to the special effects, is spectacular, a fitting complement to the ensemble's crass and witty performances. Make no mistake—for all the show's sibilant silliness, there are some mighty ambitious brains under those wigs. —Dan Jakes
