The Bloody Fabulous Curse of Dragula | Mary's Attic Theatre | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

The Bloody Fabulous Curse of Dragula Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through April 23 2010

With his second full-length script for Even and Odd Theatricals, Duane Scott Cerny shows he's almost got the chops to take on Chicago's reigning camp king--er, queen--David Cerda. In this mash-up of Dracula and Sunset Boulevard, faded, undead starlet Dragula and her neurotic butler, Max van Tampon, lure an errant Hollywood location scout into their castle and convince him to pen her cinematic comeback--a musical version of In Cold Blood. Fittingly, Cerny and director Mark Contorno raided Cerda's company to cast Ed Jones as Dragula and Michael Miller as Max. Both deliver deliciously over-the-top performances. Cerny's vulgar wit is, for the most part, razor sharp, but too often it's indulged at the expense of narrative clarity and momentum. --Justin Hayford
